There are many different ways your business can be vulnerable to cyber attack, data breach or loss, either caused by hackers, disgruntled employees or as a result of simple human error.

There is no single product or solution that will protect your IT environment or data, no “silver bullet”.

And it’s not just about protecting your own systems and data. The cyberattack on the US IT firm, SolarWinds*, is a stark reminder that, without the right protection in place, you can unwittingly be infected and pass on the problem to any other business or individual you have an electronic relationship with.

The key is being aware of the risks and minimising them by putting the right measures, including user training, in place.

Think of it as adding security in layers to stay safe much as you would wear layers of clothing to keep warm.

1. Lock down your network to minimise the risk of an intruder breaching your network perimeter.

Firewall configuration should only allow the minimum required access, close down any unneeded ports and IP addresses. Penetration testing and vulnerability scanning will help identify weaknesses which should be addressed. Consider network segmentation to restrict their movements if an intruder does break in.

2. Stop malware getting in through other channels.

Email scanning systems can quarantine emails with suspicious attachments and stop access to dangerous websites. Endpoint protection software can stop the deployment of malicious files or applications and detect them if they have been deployed. User training will help users to identify phishing and other types of cyberattacks and stop them before they escalate further.

3. Be able to detect if you have been breached and know what to do if you have.

An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) will help detect signs of compromise which may indicate that you have been breached. Have a tested Incident Response Plan in place so that you can act quickly and everyone knows what to do in the event of, and to recover from, a breach.
